Targeted Inference

Scientifically, I have wide and varied experience in the development and application of pragmatic Bayesian techniques for a diverse range of geophysical inverse problems. Among this experience is my work in developing a probabilistic seismic model for the European Arctic and inverting electromagnetic data for interfaces and associated uncertainties.

It is often said that the true value of a Bayesian perspective on geophysical inversion lies with predictive applications: as a practical example, I used prospect scale groundwater modelling to illustrate how to apply this thinking.

Presently, my research centres around applying pragmatic Bayesian concepts for exploration under cover and focuses on understanding the uncertainties that may allow for optimising mineral exploration strategies.

To Deep Earth Imaging I bring a deep understanding of the role that probabilistic approaches can play in exploration, in particular how they make a difference to exploration strategies. I pride myself on my abilities to develop state of the art yet also pragmatic algorithms for the quantification of uncertainty in exploration, especially for minerals exploration.

Technical Skills

  • Inverse problems – Of particular interest to me is the development of efficient strategies to seek information about the families of models that fit the data, while accounting for prior beliefs, data uncertainty, hidden variables  and non-uniqueness of the inverse problem.
  • Predictive applications based on a Bayesian perspective – Bayesian approaches allow the robust quantification of uncertainty and therefore provide the basis for applications as diverse as an objective optimisation of an exploration strategy or an estimation of the risk due to structural uncertainty in a groundwater usage scenario.
