Smart Active Cities

Our initial assumption that the home is the primary place to promote children’s physical activity was challenged by 40 parent interviews and 24 ethnographies. This extensive user research revealed that for children, physical activity is synonymous with play and overwhelmingly occurs in public spaces like playgrounds, parks, and immediate neighbourhoods, especially in urban environments.

We are pivoting from Smart Homes to Smart Active Cities. We will design and test an Agent-Based Behavioural Intervention integrated with Smart City infrastructure to make public spaces actively encourage spontaneous play and movement, addressing the core problem of urban childhood inactivity.
