SMA foils

The SMA foil team aimed to address the limitations of existing actuating systems, which are heavy, bulky, complex, and expensive. Their solution, utilizing shape memory alloy (SMA) foil, is simple to actuate and can be produced cost-effectively using a planar flow casting (PFC) process.

Midway through client interviews, we discovered strong enthusiasm for collaborating with CSIRO on SMA-foil-based products, though prototyping these would take 4-5 years.

However, the interviews also revealed immediate high demand for amorphous metal foil for electric motors and transformers. We are now focusing our interviews on this new opportunity.
