Optical Comms ANU
Data from satellites is a major part of our everyday lives, but today radio bandwidth for ground-to-space communication is a significant bottleneck. Optical fibre revolutionised telecommunications on the ground, and laser-based free-space optical communication is poised to be the same revolution for satellites. However, atmospheric turbulence degrades performance and lowers the reliability of the link.
We have technology for monitoring atmospheric turbulence in real-time that supports link optimization in a variety of ways, and techniques for mitigating atmospheric turbulence. This will significantly benefit network operators and help them keep up with the bandwidth demands of the future.
