ECU CPPP
The destruction of Juukan Gorge, a 46,000-year-old sacred Indigenous site, by a major mining company revealed a deep failure of justice, accountability, and inclusion in the mining sector. Our research, based on numerous interviews with community members, mining professionals, consultants, Indigenous advisors, and employees, shows that while mining provides vital jobs and resources, it often comes with significant social and environmental costs.
Local communities are frequently excluded from decisions, and sustainability is treated as a box-ticking exercise. Yet there is strong appetite for change. We propose a framework for place-based, inclusive, regenerative mining that centres community co-creation and voice.
