Research description
In June 2020, UNSW and the Providence Asset Group announced the establishment of the Hydrogen Energy Research Centre (HERC) at the UNSW Sydney campus.
The HERC facilities are to be installed over a seven-year period with the support of an initial AUD$5 million investment from the Providence Asset Group. The new facilities include:
- An applied research and development, prototyping and testing laboratory
- A production hub, including small-scale manufacturing, testing, certification and validation infrastructure
- An experience centre, including a training facility
A major focus of UNSW hydrogen research has been in the area of hydrogen storage technologies, especially the development of metal alloys that bond with hydrogen and are capable of storing surplus electricity.
UNSW, with partners H2Store, received an AUD$3.5 million investment from the Providence Asset Group in March 2019 to support the development of a hydrogen storage system.
