Project description

(This project was previously titled ‘Future Energy and Hydrogen Precinct’.)

CleanCo is a Queensland publicly owned electricity generator and operates the Swanbank E combined-cycle gas-fired power station, near Brisbane, capable of generating up to 385 MW of power. Once part of a precinct of coal-fired power stations – Swanbank A, B, C and D – Swanbank E remains the only operating power station on the site.

With an overall transmission network capacity of approximately 1.2 GW, the Swanbank site has significant potential for new energy opportunities to complement the existing 385 MW Swanbank E Power Station, as well as other non-energy uses, including research and development facilities.

CleanCo is now undertaking a master planning process for the Swanbank Clean Energy Hub to identify how the site may best serve the energy network in the future.

CleanCo is seeking to understand the suitability of various technologies for implementation at the Swanbank Clean Energy Hub through an industry Expression of Interest process. This process will enable CleanCo to make decisions on the final mix of future energy options suited to the site. Hydrogen is one of the clean energy technologies under consideration, with one of potential uses including the possible feed of renewable hydrogen into Swanbank E power station.

In August 2021, the Queensland Government announced AUD$1.5 million of funding in support of the development of concept-level design options as part of its COVID-19 economic recovery plan.
