Project description

A Memorandum of Understanding is in place between entX and Kimberly-Clark Australia to investigate the partial replacement of the existing energy supply to the Kimberly-Clark Millicent Mill in South Australia (approximately 400 kilometres south-east of Adelaide) with renewables-based hydrogen.

A pre-feasibility study was conducted in 2022 and to better understand the opportunity a feasibility study commenced in April 2023 (WGA and Linde Engineering).

Available information indicates a two staged development has been under consideration:

  • Stage 1 – 10 MW – 4.5 tonnes per day of hydrogen produced to blend at 20% by volume into the natural gas feed for the existing 23 MW cogeneration plant (which is currently the primary fuel source to electrify and supply process heat to the plant)
  • Stage 2 – 65 MW – ~26 tonnes per day of hydrogen to assist Kimberly Clark Australia transition to 100% renewables-based energy for heating gas requirements.

The project has been initially designed as a grid-based concept, with renewable energy drawn from the National Electricity Market.  There are additional concepts where at a later point, an off-grid renewable energy supply could be integrated into the project.

entX has indicated there is also the opportunity for the project to scale up to support the emerging industrial customers looking for green hydrogen supplies in the Limestone Coast region.

The project is targeting commercial production of hydrogen by late 2026.
