Project description
This project is developing a renewables-based hydrogen production facility planned to be located in Melbourne, Victoria.
This project will provide a source of renewable hydrogen to support the adoption of fuel-cell-based power systems in stationary and mobility applications.
The hydrogen production facility will include a 1-megawatt (MW) electrolysis system with a maximum hydrogen production capacity of 425 kilograms per day (if operating at 24-hour capacity).
Renewable energy for the electrolyser will be sourced via the grid primarily during low demand / low price periods, thereby helping reduce the cost of hydrogen production and contributing to grid stability. Production will be scaled according to demand.
The project proponent has ordered key hydrogen production equipment and is in discussions with potential offtakers. Operations are anticipated to commence in 2025.
The Victorian Government is supporting the Energys Renewable Hydrogen Production Facility through an award of AUD$1,000,000 through its Renewable Hydrogen Commercialisation Pathways Fund.
In a separately funded activity by the Victorian Government, in October 2023, Energys unveiled the first of five Hydrogen Fuel Cell Generators being manufactured for Telstra as part of an alternative energy backup pilot program. Telstra is to install the units at five sites in outer-regional Victoria which have a history of storm-related power blackouts to provide on-demand zero emissions backup power (in an initiative supported by the Victorian Government through its Renewable Hydrogen Commercialisation Pathways Fund). In July 2024, Energys announced that it and Telstra have officially commissioned five hydrogen-powered back-up generators at critical regional mobile phone towers around Victoria.
