Project description

The Darwin Green Liquid Hydrogen Export Project is a ‘commercial-demonstration’ international Joint Development Project (JDP) that aims to export 42,000 tonnes per annum of renewables-based liquid hydrogen to the Korean transport sector within this decade.

The supply chain is an ‘All-Seaborne’ project development including an export barge terminal in Darwin with electrolysis and liquefaction facilities on the topsides and liquid hydrogen product stored in the hull. A suitable protected site has been identified for the export barge at Channel Island close to the Middle Arm Sustainable Development Precinct (MASDP) in Darwin. A large-scale 50,000 cubic metre liquid hydrogen tanker and a barge import terminal at Pyeongtaek Korea, complete the commercial scale ‘whole supply chain’ configuration.

The project proponent has indicated a Memorandum of Understanding/Letter of Intent for renewables-based power supply is in place with the Sun Cable solar/battery project, also in the Northern Territory.

The project proponent has indicated a Memorandum of Understanding/Letter of Intent offtake agreement has also been secured with Korean Importers. The commercial demonstration phase also includes long term domestic supply arrangements for renewables-based liquid hydrogen, for a multi-user liquid hydrogen refuelling terminal for fuel cell vehicles at the Middle Arm Sustainable Development Precinct, and liquid hydrogen supply for micro-grid small hydrogen gas turbine developments in the Northern Territory.

Future expansions of the Darwin Export Project are planned, possibly at the Middle Arm Sustainable Development Precinct, potentially increasing total liquid hydrogen production capacity to 126,000 tonnes per annum.

Further information about the project and a collaboration meeting with the Northern Territory Government at end 2022 is at the following link:  LATTICE Technology hold collaboration meeting with Northern Territory Government (lattice-technology.com)
