Project description
The project proponent has approved an investment of up to US$50 million to construct a green iron trial commercial plant at its Christmas Creek iron ore mine site, targeting annual production of more than 1,500 tonnes of ‘green iron’. Start of works on the site began in August 2024. First production is anticipated for 2025.
The Plant would utilise the proponent’s existing renewables-based hydrogen production infrastructure at its Christmas Creek operations Green Energy Hub (which includes production, storage and refuelling infrastructure for both gaseous and liquid hydrogen, with the latter supporting Fortescue’s hydrogen-powered haul truck prototype).
The project proponent indicates that it has been examining various hydrogen-based pathways to produce green iron, while also developing a low-temperature, electrochemical process at its Perth R&D facility.
