Ground movement caused by current and past mining activities is a serious environmental and safety hazards. Fly ash backfill technology has been developed in our team to control subsidence caused by underground mine workings. As coal mining is moving into deeper and more geologically complex environment, the risk of coal burst is also increasing in the mining industry. Also, recent trends of working in increasingly deeper mines generate high gas content and pressure and lower permeability, which presents greater risks to safe mining operations. Roadway stability is an outstanding challenge in deep mining. A significant problem is the excessive deformation which makes the normal support system very difficult to be effective.
