Graincast™: back in 2019

December 13th, 2018

Hand holding a phoneMuch of the national grain crop will have been harvested by now in what was mostly very dry conditions for many growers. Thank you to those who signed up to our new Graincast™ app and followed our wheat yield forecasts.

Graincast app

We had an overwhelming response from growers to our Graincast™ app when we launched it in June 2018. We hope to be open for new registrations soon for the 2019 grain growing season.

Did you use the app? Any feedback on how it worked for you, we’d love to hear it. Please email us on graincast@csiro.au or tweet it using #Graincast.

Graincast forecasting

With our final Graincast™ forecast for 2018 on 16 November, we posted that the national wheat yield is still tracking well below the last 30 year average. Based on conditions from 16 November to completion of harvest over the last 30 years, we forecast the range will be from 1.40 to 1.42 t/ha. For Western Australia, we estimate yields will be slightly above average and well ahead of the other states.

We will post a forecast covering the 2018 season early next year once the harvest is completed across the whole grain zone.

We’ll be able to see how on track we were with our forecasts in January when the preliminary harvest figures are published by ABARES.
