Sugarcane production enhanced with AI

July 29th, 2022

Funded by #Aus4Innovation, the partnership between the University of Wollongong and VIGREEN – a Vietnamese tech company – is developing an AI-driven airborne system to help monitor and assess the health of sugarcane for early detection of unwanted health problems.

The project team has completed installing pilot soil moisture sensors to provide real-time data to farmers on a mobile app. An imaging algorithm is also being calibrated to help detect nutritional stress, water stress and leaf diseases on sugarcane. When perfected, this technology will help thousands of farmers protect their crops and investment and assure the input volume for sugar manufacturers.
