Connecting research to market

This Science Commercialisation Partnerships (SCP) pathway is about exploring different ways for research and business to work together to commercialise science and technology, and to solve known industry challenges.

SCP is testing multiple approaches to partnering – from traditional approaches like licensing and contracting, to non-traditional approaches like regional innovation clusters and graduate-industry programs for universities.

 

Seven Technology Transfer Pilots have been identified to commercialise technology for the agriculture and food sector on the north, centre and south of Vietnam. The seven pilots are:

Nano products for sustainable farming

SCP has also catalysed five less traditional Innovation Pilots:

Central Highlands Innovation Cluster
The Community Development Center is bringing together research, business, community and government to develop and promote competitive branding for regional agricultural products – coffee, pepper and tea – based on innovation and a shared purpose.

Horticulture Innovation Club
The Horticulture Innovation Club is a mechanism for agribusinesses to connect with researchers to jointly address external shocks to the temperate fruit industry in Vietnam’s northern provinces. This pilot is hosted by the Vietnam Academy of Agricultural Sciences and is a physical and virtual network for exchange, collaboration, networking and capacity building.

Industry-focused graduate program
This industry-focused graduate program is about tailoring education to meet current and emerging industry needs. The pilot builds on a new CTU-Ministry of Education and Training initiative to train industry actors in food processing, and will focus on adding value to current agricultural exports.

Intermediary Innovation Pilot
This pilot explores how private sector intermediary companies and public sector research organisations can better connect to identify and promote innovation opportunities for researchers to address SME issues. These intermediaries already act as informal brokers between business and research to address particular problems – this pilot looks at how their role could be formalised, replicated or scaled.

In this pilot, Can Tho University will be working the National Health Organization Tech Company Can Tho who work with farmers to certify their products for different markets and to connect them with relevant production and market expertise.

Innovation capacity for industry pilot
This pilot explores how industry-wide challenges could be addressed by collaboration and industry-wide investment in innovation. SCP is partnering with the Food Transparency Association, the seafood industry in south Vietnam and the pepper industry in central Vietnam to address long-term opportunities.
