Dr Mark Hedley – Research Group Leader Wireless
Mark currently leads a research group at Data61 based in Marsfield, Sydney. He received a B.Sc degree, majoring in Computer Science and Pure Mathematics, and a B.E. (Electrical) degree with University Medal and First Class Honours, both from the University of Sydney. He subsequently completed a Ph.D. in medical imaging, and was a member of the academic staff also at the University of Sydney, where he taught a number of undergraduate courses and undertook research in medical imaging, image processing and video compression. During this time he was also part of a start-up company, Dilithium Networks, developing video coding solutions for transcoding gateways. Mark then joined CSIRO, where he has led projects in video coding, acoustic imaging, wireless communications and tracking, and he has held a number of leadership positions.
Mark has led the development of wireless positioning technology at CSIRO over the last decade, and is a recognised expert in the field. He has been awarded multiple industry awards, from Engineers Australia and the Australian Innovation Challenge, in this field for the successful commercialisation of his research which is protected by a portfolio of eight patents. Mark is an author of over one hundred international publications, and numerous reports for industry, many of which are related to his expertise in positioning technology. Mark is a Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, and holds and Honorary Appointment as Adjunct Professor at UTS.
Dr Wei Ni| Team Leader
Dr Wei Ni received the B.E. and Ph.D. degrees in Electronic Engineering from Fudan University, Shanghai, China, in 2000 and 2005, respectively. Currently, he is a Senior Research Scientist and Team Leader, Data61, CSIRO, Sydney, Australia. Prior to this, he was a Senior Researcher, Devices R&D, Nokia (Jan 2008 –March 2009); and a Research Scientist and Deputy Project Manager, Research & Innovation (R&I) Center, Bell Labs, Alcatel/Alcatel-Lucent (Jan 2005 – Dec 2007). His efforts led to an Alcatel-Lucent internal venture and three product projects, ten accepted IEEE standard technical proposals, and 25 patents. He has published 38 journal papers and 29 conference papers.
Dr Wei Ni serves as an Editor for Hindawi Journal of Engineering since 2012, Secretary of IEEE VTS NSW Chapter since 2014, Track Chair of VTC’16-Spring, Track Chair of VTC’17-Spring, Chair of Student Travel Grant for WPMC 2014, and Publication Chair of ISCIT 2015.
Mr David Robertson – Research Manager
David is a senior IT/Telecommunication professional with over 30 years experience in managing the development and delivery of emerging technologies within the Telecommunications and related Information Technology sectors.
David was the Program Manager for CSIRO’s Ngara Rural Wireless Broadband program and successfully managed the delivery of two technology demonstrators: 10Gbps Point to Point Microwave Backhaul system; and a 50Mbps Point to Multipoint MU-MIMO based Access system.
David is currently managing several wireless research and commercial projects at CSIRO that have evolved from the initial Ngara program in the areas of: High speed E-Band point to point Backhaul; Narrowband point to multipoint Access technology for Public Safety networks; and a wireless enabled sensor platform for an automated braking application in transport industry.
Prior to joining CSIRO, David has held similar emerging wireless technology program/senior project management roles at Optus with their IP RAN project; Unwired Australia’s initial rollout of pre-WiMAX services in Sydney; and Austar’s trials of fixed wireless technologies in regional Australia.
