Guidelines for Diversity and Inclusion in Artificial Intelligence
The guidelines for Diversity and Inclusion (D&I) in Artificial Intelligence (AI) are published as a chapter in the Book titled “Responsible AI: Best Practices for Creating Trustworthy AI Systems”. We address the evolving and holistic nature of AI technologies, the importance of diversity and inclusion consideration in the development and deployment of AI, and the potential consequences of neglecting it. We provide a normative definition for D&I in AI built upon the five pillars of the AI ecosystem: humans, data, process, system, and governance.
We offer practical and comprehensive guidelines for embedding D&I considerations within AI ecosystem to assist AI practitioners in a cost-effective, context-sensitive manner. We emphasize the importance of a socio-technical perspective on diversity and inclusion in AI, highlighting the necessity of involving relevant stakeholders with diverse attributes, examining cultural dynamics and norms, and evaluating societal impacts. We have adopted a multidisciplinary approach, drawing on key reports, literature reviews, grey literature findings, and informal communication with specialists.
To further support practitioners in their efforts to incorporate D&I principles, we have created a comprehensive question bank and user story template that facilitates inquiry and reflection on D&I aspects in AI projects. These resources encourage critical thinking about potential biases, blind spots, and opportunities for improvement, fostering a more inclusive and ethically responsible approach to AI development.
