Measuring what people eat

CSIRO has expertise and a range of dietary assessment and measurement tools which can be used to assess the food intake of Australians. These tools can be used to determine nutritional needs of the population and inform the development of novel foods or programs to improve the health of our community.

Developing assessment tools

We develop online dietary assessment tools to measure a range of health behaviours.

This includes the CSIRO Healthy Diet Score, our scientifically validated short food questionnaire with personalised feedback about how diets comply with dietary guidelines. The CSIRO Healthy Diet Score has resulted in a large database of Australian dietary consumption patterns which can be used for further research and analysis.

CSIRO has also conducted Australia’s largest diet and personality survey to test individuals ‘diet types’ in order to tailor dietary interventions to match individual’s behaviours and preferences.

Our online gut health quiz has also been used by Australian’s to help determine if they have a “healthy gut”.

We can develop a range of health behaviour tools, so reach out if you would like to learn more.

Monitoring the food supply

Our team partners with the Heart Foundation to manage FoodTrackTM. FoodTrackTM is a supermarket food label and nutrient data base which covers more than 90% of Australia’s national retail packaged food market across the four major retailers – Coles, Woolworths, ALDI and IGA.

The database is considered one of Australia’s most accurate sources of information for the healthcare and food industries. FoodTrackTM started in 2014 and we have been updating the data annually thereafter. Our group can perform customised analyses for food industry to identify new opportunities or gaps in the market such as; competitor benchmarking, product development, reformulation, nutrition trends, and labelling opportunities.

Our  group can also assess changes in the nutritional composition of the food supply over time, to inform research and guide public health nutrition strategies.

Contact us to discuss how FoodTrackTM can be used for market insights or public health research.

Customers can also access the FoodTrackTM data directly to conduct their own investigations through our commercial partner.
