Health impacts of foods

Our group integrates scientific information and regulations to guide food labelling including food-health claims. Food label elements such as health claims or nutrient content claims can communicate the nutritional qualities and health benefits of foods and beverages to consumers.

Supporting health claims

Our group has an excellent knowledge of health claims regulations and practices in Australia and New Zealand, and a good knowledge of the relevant regulations in Europe, the United States, China, Singapore, and other countries. This understanding can be deployed to assist food companies to interpret and comply with food labelling regulations.

Our Food Label Advisory Group (FLAG) undertakes scoping studies, develops scientific dossiers that comply with the requirements of the Food Standards Code, assesses scientific dossiers assembled by others, and provides guidance about what more is required in order to make a health claim.

Testing the health effects of food products

South Australian Medical Research Industry Building

CSIRO also has a skilled and experienced clinical trials team with state-of-the-art facilities, which can be used to test the health effects of food products. In addition, through pre-clinical studies, CSIRO is able to test new ingredients and prototype foods using models for gut health, cardiovascular health, obesity and glucose control.

We also measure the impact of lifestyle choices and foods on cognition. These studies contribute to scientific evidence for health claims for food and nutraceutical products.

Our clinical trials work goes beyond food products including studies evaluating the effects of entire eating patterns, meal distribution and timing approaches, and technology devices like continuous glucose monitoring.
