Celebrating two decades of CSIRO Research at Ningaloo!
Recently in Exmouth, we came together for the Ningaloo Outlook Community Event a celebration of nearly two decades of research at Ningaloo.
From whale sharks to nesting turtles, to shallow and deep reefs, we shared new discoveries, including:
- The first-ever close-kin estimates of whale shark population size
- Green turtles – how many, and where they go after nesting?
- How the record-breaking 2025 marine heatwave is affecting Ningaloo’s reefs
- Discovery of the largest known deep-water Cycloseris reef – an extraordinary coral community thriving in the twilight zone!

The energy in the room was summed up perfectly by a local attendee “This research is needed now more than ever!”
A massive thank you to our science team, our community and industry partners, and the many collaborating agencies who’ve made this work possible.
This research was funded by Ningaloo Outlook (a strategic marine research partnership between CSIRO and Woodside Energy to better understand Ningaloo Reef and its important ecological values).
