National reporting
More frequent and more severe bushfires are increasingly impacting our environment, including the state, condition and resilience of ecosystems and the biodiversity they support.
National information on current bushfire impacts and projections of future risks to ecosystems and biodiversity is important to improve management of these critical resources.
To quantify the impacts of the widespread and destructive 2019-20 bushfires multiple data sources, including from state and territory agencies, were needed to identify appropriate response and recovery actions.
Readily available and nationally consistent bushfire information will help to overcome some of the current limitations in assembling a coherent view of current and future bushfire spread and severity.
Additionally, NBIC has the potential to provide inputs to national State of the Environment reporting and alignment with other programs including water quality planning and the National Greenhouse Gas Inventory.
