Digital Capability

Staff who make up the Digital Capability within MRI are involved in almost all areas of MRI science. They play a key role in enabling and delivering MRI science, with a focus on delivery of science impact, and addressing internal and external client needs.

MRI Digital Capability is responsible for the development, maintenance and delivery of a range of foundational platforms. This ‘digital platform’ approach allows MRI to leverage off the investment in digital delivery across the business unit, building efficiencies and synergies between projects and programs. These foundational modelling platforms include:

  • Atlantis ecosystem modelling
  • Fisheries stock assessment tools including Management Strategy Evaluation (MSE) software
  • Development of close kin modelling methodology for fisheries assessment
  • Simulation modelling of trawl fisheries; impacts and management to assess seabed status and compare alternative management actions
  • Model simulations on High Performance Computing
  • Metadata catalogues for managing data and driving decision support and modelling systems

We are responsible for delivery of project outcomes via visualisation and decision support tools including:

  • Decision support tools including online public web-based tools, for example SIMA-Austral, Macquarie Harbour Visualisation Dashboard, CONNIE (Connectivity modelling suite), MAREE (Marine Ecological Emulator)
  • Data services and data analysis services feeding into government initiatives and government agencies such as the ‘National Map’ (, and ‘Illegal Unreported and Unregulated’ (IUU) fishing
  • Decision support systems for identifying potential forms of harvest strategies for data poor fisheries
  • Anomaly detection for vessel tracking data and web-based delivery to support national and international agencies and agreements

We work with other staff on project related activities including:

  • Database development, maintenance and delivery, for example the national databases of seabed biota distributions and trawl fishing effort across Australia
  • Geographic information systems
  • Automated report generation for fisheries management agencies
  • Data analysis, for example Gene tagging data analysis
