International Fisheries

CSIRO and international partners are finding ways to trace the provenance of tuna to reduce illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing.

This project is aimed at enabling Indonesian fisheries scientists, industry actors and managers to improve the effectiveness of monitoring and management systems for tuna fisheries.

We are using invisible DNA 'fingerprints' from individual juvenile southern bluefin tuna (SBT) as tags for monitoring the size of the population and to provide data for setting the total allowable global catch.
