Richard Matear Joins ACCESS Oversight Committee
DCFP’s Group Leader, Richard Matear has recently been appointed to the Australian Community Climate and Earth System Simulator (ACCESS) Oversight Committee.
The Committee provides efficient and effective governance for the national weather, climate and Earth System modelling system, ACCESS.
In collaboration with the Bureau of Meteorology, CSIRO has contributed to the development of ACCESS; a system that embodies a national approach to climate and weather prediction modelling. ACCESS gives CSIRO and the Bureau of Meteorology the best possible scientific tools for climate impact and adaptation analysis, and weather forecasting.
ACCESS represents a huge advance over earlier, simpler climate models, and is tested and fed by data from earth-observing satellites and other climate sensors.
ACCESS will also help Australian scientists contribute to major international climate modelling and prediction projects, and will provide Australia’s major input to the sixth assessment report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) on the world’s climate future.
The Oversight Committee works to facilitate the sharing of information, raise issues relating to ACCESS development and improve coordination around ACCESS.
