Institute for Frontier Materials Presentation
On 23rd August, Project Leader Richard Matear presented to a group of engineering students and faculty from the Deakin University’s Institute for Frontier Materials (within the Faculty of Science, Engineering and Built Environment).
His presentation discussed recent climate trends in Australia, how climate models are used to simulate climate, which are the features emerging in the climate projections for Australia over the next century and how CSIRO Decadal Climate forecasting project is working to deliver decadal forecasts.
Producing decadal climate forecasts requires utilising atmosphere, ocean and sea ice observations to set the initial state of the climate required for a forecast. The project is generating a forecast dataset of the recent past (retrospective forecasts) to assess the forecast skill and explore the utility of the forecasts for decisions making. By the end of the year the project will start producing decadal climate forecasts.
