Decadal Climate Forecasting Project Presents Work at the 4th Annual COSIMA Workshop

September 13th, 2019

In early September 2019 Paul Sandery, Pavel Sakov, Terry O’Kane and Vassili Kitsios delivered a presentation to the 4th Annual Consortium of Ocean-Sea Ice Modelling in Australia (COSIMA) Workshop at ANU in Canberra.

CSIRO is an institutional member of COSIMA; the goal of the consortium is to jointly develop ocean and sea ice model configurations.

The presentation introduced the coupled ocean-atmosphere-sea-ice data assimilation system which has been developed by DCFP staff.

They demonstrated that it is a suitable framework for future efforts in ocean-sea-ice forecasting for the COSIMA community. The talk also briefly focused on the concept that sea-ice analysis within a coupled model requires consideration of the cross-domain error covariances between sea-ice and the ocean, so that the analysis has physical and dynamical consistency.
