DCFP Joins International Effort for Climate Prediction
The Decadal Climate Forecasting Project (DCFP) today joined a World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) effort by becoming an accredited annual-to-decadal climate prediction centre, the first centre from the Southern Hemisphere to participate in the effort.
The achievement marks a significant milestone for the DCFP by delivering the historical ensemble climate renanalysis and retrospective forecasts that satisfy the requirements to become a Global Data Producing Centre for near-term climate forecasting.
“Becoming an WMO accredited centre is no mean feat. This achievement builds on years of work and involved the expertise of the entire DCFP Team” said Terry O’Kane, Leader of DCFP’s Data Analysis, Climate Modelling and Ensembles Team.
“As part of the WMO global effort we hope to help accelerate multiyear climate services globally, and in the process, broaden the benefits of the Decadal Climate Forecasting Project to our Australian stakeholders,” said Dr Richard Matear, Project Leader.
The near-term climate predictions are now available through the MetOffice Website
