Microbial activity
Successful development of underground storage technologies for hydrogen gas will require methods/tools to assess site potential and understand technical and economic risks and challenges. The ability to recreate in situ conditions in a laboratory setting to represent a site of interest and examine microbial impacts addresses a key challenge identified in relation to underground hydrogen storage – the potential for microbial consortia to convert H2 to contaminant gases (e.g., CH4) or to produce H2S with the potential to damage underground storage infrastructure.
