About us
Located across two sites in Brisbane, QLD, Australia and Clayton, NSW, Australia, CSIRO Robotics has a history dating back to 1980’s. Our mission is to develop cutting-edge research in robotics and autonomous systems and to apply these technologies in domains of strategic importance to Australia and the world. We focus on attending to technology needs of several application domains for organisations and industries in high priority sectors which are of strategic value to Australia.
Our current portfolio includes projects in manufacturing, agriculture, mining, biosecurity, biodiversity, oceanographic research, and scientific data acquisition. We are open for new engagements and projects from any of these sectors as well as from energy, health and construction.
We develop core technologies for highly autonomous, competent and reliable robotic systems that can:
- execute complex missions in challenging outdoor and indoor environments,
- interact safely and seamlessly with humans and other dynamic agents,
- be deployed in a broad range of application domains of strategic relevance to Australia and the world.
Our competitive advantages include:
- world-class research,
- highly skilled team of researchers, software engineers and hardware engineers with broad and deep experience in field robotics,
- world-class laboratory infrastructure and a large number of ground, legged, aerial and aquatic robot platforms for testing,
- multidisciplinary collaborations within CSIRO which allow us to work with deep domain experts in different application domains, and enable us to develop and tailor solutions to real problems in the real world,
- extensive national and international collaboration networks with industry and academia.

Collaboration
From collaboration within Data61 to several cross-CSIRO joint projects and collaboration, our partners span the globe across industries, academia and research institutions.
We are one of the founder members of the Sixth Wave Alliance, an Australian robotics alliance created to integrate all the key robotics research organisations and industry partners in Australia, providing a framework to enable a high level of R&D collaboration among the partner institutions, leveraging existing programs and investments.
Industry
CSIRO Robotics is currently (and have been historically) highly diversified in external engagements, with clients from multiple industries including manufacturing, agriculture, mining, biosecurity, biodiversity, oceanographic research, and scientific data acquisition.
Boeing and Woodside are the two largest customers, with Boeing officially becoming a partner in 2011 and the engagement is focused on improving situational awareness in the factory.
Several other partners play a crucial role on the work that we do and have done in the recent past.
Academic & Research Institutions
The Group has also engaged with multiple high profile academic and research institutions across the globe. Only in the last five years (2012-2017) we have had joint publications or joint research supervision with more than 15 Australian and over 20 international universities and organisations.

Outreach
CSIRO Robotics is highly involved in outreach programs and initiatives that showcase the benefits of our work to society as well as excite children and young adults for a career in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics).
Technical visits of our facilities & robots, guest talks, and competitions are just some examples of our outreach initiatives.
