NBIC Council report back #1
About the NBIC Council
NBIC Council members have been nominated from each jurisdiction across Australia and have been provided with the authority and legitimacy to represent their constituents.
Their role is to create and sustain a whole of government authorising environment for the release and use of national NBIC bushfire products and to provide direction setting of future stages of the NBIC project.

After each meeting the Council members will report back to their jurisdiction. This is the first report back for the formal NBIC Council.
NBIC Council meeting #1 – 23 April 2024
This was the inaugural meeting of the formal NBIC Council. Of note from this meeting:
- Overview of the NBIC project. This included background about the team and science areas; outputs so far; example use cases for Stage 1 data; and the design of the governance components of the project.
- Presentation of NBIC governance arrangements. These have been designed specifically to address the common institutional challenges associated with national data harmonisation efforts.
- Recognition of the support and guidance of the interim NBIC Council. Interim Council meetings commenced on October 29, 2021. The interim Council played a significant part in enabling and guiding the NBIC project to secure multimillion-dollar funding (NBIC – ACS Stage 2) and tested and guided the published Stage 1 outputs. The work of interim NBIC Council members was invaluable and we thank all members for their contributions.
NBIC Council meeting #2 – 3 July 2024
Of note from this meeting:
Commencement of co-development of NBIC Stage 3 with users and stakeholders.
- NBIC Stage 2 concludes in April 2025. The NBIC team commenced consultation with state, territory and federal jurisdictions to understand stakeholder needs for inclusion in Stage 3 planning.
- NBIC Council members will commence circulating a survey to assist in this consultation. Fill out the NBIC Stage 3 scoping survey. Understanding the importance of options to each state/territory/federal jurisdiction is the ultimate goal.
Formation of a Technical Commitee. Their role will be:
- Developing and overseeing arrangements for the supply of data into NBIC.
- Providing technical review on NBIC national products.
- Providing technical advice and guidance as requested by NBIC technical team on aspects of national product development and ongoing use.
Conduct of jurisdiction workshops. NBIC has a goal of holding workshops with jurisdictions to gather the intelligence needs of users. Workshops to date have already informed the work of NBIC – ACS Stage 2 and NBIC Stage 3 scoping.
