The problem

Cameras and electronic monitoring are becoming more prevalent in fisheries management. This trend is expected to continue.

Coverage

  • In Australia, the Australian Fisheries Management Authority (AFMA) have cameras on vessels in the Eastern Tuna and Billfish Fishery (ETBF), and the Southern and Eastern Scalefish and Shark Fishery net sector. A minimum of 10% of the footage from these cameras is viewed.

Costly

  • Current methods of video and image analysis remain slow, labour intensive and the associated costs can be substantial
  • Industry, government and management agencies cover these costs
  • Cost reductions could free-up resources for other things

Accuracy

  • Accuracy of analysis also varies widely across observers, and video analysts

Safety

  • On-board observing can be dangerous and even fatal for human observers
