Organisational biodiversity assessment

Estimating the direct impacts of an organisation on biodiversity and planning for the future to support nature-related financial disclosures

The challenge

There is a rapidly growing need for efficient but rigorous methods for organisations to assess and disclose their biodiversity impacts.

Our Response

CSIRO has applied its biodiversity modelling science to develop a habitat-based analytical approach for estimating the direct impacts of an organisation on biodiversity. Our broad approach considers the time series of an organisation’s spatial footprint, with the biodiversity position derived as the accumulated positive and negative impacts over space and time. This biodiversity monitoring assessment is directly linked to a future-looking scenario analysis capability to help organisations improve their current biodiversity position into the future.

This biodiversity assessment system has been embedded in the NatureIQ tool, to enable access for organisations around the world. The biodiversity indicators provided by NatureIQ align with core metrics identified by the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD).
