Research description

In February 2021, the Victorian Government announced the establishment of the Swinburne University of Technology Victorian Hydrogen Hub that would:

  • Be a major precinct for the exploration of new hydrogen technologies, including clean energy vehicles and hydrogen storage containers
  • Provide opportunities for students and researchers to work with industry partners to develop and implement opportunities for hydrogen across Victoria
  • Develop a roadmap for vocational training to support the implementation of hydrogen related technologies and services
  • Work with industry to assess their hydrogen readiness and new business and supply chain opportunities, and
  • Be a place where the community can learn about hydrogen as a sustainable energy source

As part of this initiative, CSIRO is to receive more than AUD$1 million towards the development of a refuelling station to fuel and test hydrogen vehicles. The refuelling station will be located at the CSIRO’s Clayton campus in Melbourne, Victoria.

Construction of facilities under this initiative is expected to begin in early 2022 and take about 18 months, with a twin facility slated for Stuttgart in Germany, fostering an international hydrogen development exchange.

The Victorian Government has indicated that half the PhD and Masters scholarships awarded under this initiative will be to women to boost female participation in the sector.

Note: ARENA2036 (Active Research Environment for the Next generation of Automobiles) is one of nine research campuses of the funding initiative “Research Campus – Public-Private Partnership for Innovations” in Germany.
