Project description
The Incitec Pivot Gibson Island site in Brisbane has been operational since 1969 and primarily manufactures nitrogen based fertiliser products, including ammonia, urea, ammonium sulphate and carbon dioxide using natural gas as the principal site feedstock. Gibson Island despatches approximately 550,000 tonnes of fertilisers each year.
The proponents are undertaking a feasibility study to assess whether industrial scale manufacturing of green ammonia at Gibson Island is technically and commercially feasible on an existing brownfield site.
The study will investigate the building of an electrolysis facility on the site to produce around 50,000 tonnes of renewable hydrogen per year, which would then be used for green ammonia production for Australian and export markets.
Preliminary results from the feasibility study are expected to be available at the end of the 2021.
