ATCO Hydrogen Blending Project

Project description

This project would see up to 10% renewable hydrogen blended into discrete sections of the Western Australian gas distribution network, at around 2,500 connections. It would meet one of the ‘goals to achieve by 2022’ included in the Western Australian Renewable Hydrogen Strategy (that of ‘renewable hydrogen is distributed in a WA gas network’).

ATCO Australia owns and operates the majority of Western Australia’s gas distribution network.

Initially, the blending would use renewable-based hydrogen produced at ATCO’s existing Clean Energy Innovation Hub in Jandakot, Perth. As blending extends further into the network, and in higher concentrations, in the coming years it is anticipated this investment would further spur the growth of the renewable hydrogen industry, including ATCO’s planned Clean Energy Innovation Park project.

In August 2021, it was announced that ATCO had received AUD$1.97 million in funding under Round 2 of the Western Australian Government Renewable Hydrogen Fund (capital works) to assist the project.
