Where are the hot and cool spots in Darwin?
In Darwin’s dry season, surface temperature ‘hot spots’ are found where there is lots of paving, roofs, bare ground and dry grass. ‘Cool spots’ are found where there are trees, water, green vegetation and shade. This type of information can help with finding ways to cool Darwin.
The colours in this video show surface temperatures from coolest (blue) to hottest (red). The map has been developed from data collected by the Landsat 8 satellite and shows averaged surface temperatures mid-morning during the dry seasons of 2018/19. More details are available in this report.
