HRI Experimental Design Tool
For people new to human-robot interaction (HRI) research and user study evaluation, the experimental design process can be difficult to navigate. In a new book titled “Experimental Methodology for Human-Robot Interaction: Guidelines and Case Studies for Human-Centred and Ethical Robotics Research“, led by members of the CSIRO Robotics HRI team, we provide an overview and guidelines for HRI experimental design and evaluation methodologies.
This book aims at helping researchers and students new to the field with its introduction to the HRI experimental study life cycle in Part I. Further, experienced researchers and practitioners can benefit from the advanced methods introduced in Part II. In addition, the diverse collection of case studies in Part III will allow readers to grasp the state of the art and apply what they have learned in their own practices.
Accompanying this book, we developed an interactive tool, which provides a diagram of the individual steps during the typical life cycle of an HRI research study, as shown in the figure below. This interactive tool includes brief descriptions of each step and associated guidelines on experimental methodologies. Users of this tool can enter details regarding their own research study and save this overview locally to guide their subsequent experimentation and analysis. This tool was presented at the HRI 2025 conference as part of the tutorial “Starting your Multimodal HRI Study Journey“.
