3 June 2022: Our paper “An Experimental Study of Two-way Ranging Optimization in UWB-based Simultaneous Localization and Wall-Mapping Systems,” received Best Paper Award (one out of 240 papers) in IWCMC’22, May 30 – June 3, 2022, Dubrovnik, Croatia.

Short Bio

Dr Wei Ni was awarded BE and Ph.D. degrees in Electronics Engineering in 2000 and 2005, respectively, both from Fudan University, Shanghai, China. He is the Principal Research Scientist of the Information Security and Privacy Group (ISP) in CSIRO, where he drives cutting-edge research in the security and privacy of future network systems, e.g., sixth-generation (6G) network systems, supply gain integrity and traceability, federated measurable circular economy, and coordinates research activities with the government, defense, industries, and universities.

Previously, he was the Group Leader of the CSIRO Cybernetics Group, where he was directly responsible for bringing $4.6m and contributed and helped bring over $12m in research projects from the industry in the past four years. He has helped bring $2.5m in appropriation projects internal to CSIRO. In the same period, the technologies he contributed brought in over $400k p.a. in royalty. Dr Ni is also an adjunct professor at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) since 2018 and an honorary professor at Macquarie University (MQ) since 2019. Before joining CSIRO, he was a Senior Researcher at Nokia Devices R&D (Jan 2008 – March 2009), and a Deputy Project Manager at Alcatel-Lucent Bell Labs Research & Innovation Centre (Jan 2005 – Dec 2007). His research interest covers deep learning, deep reinforcement, stochastic optimization, analytics and modelling, and their applications to network integrity, security, and efficiency.

Dr Ni has published five book chapters, 231 journal papers (including 118 IEEE Transactions and 19 IEEE Magazine papers), and 93 conference papers and contributed significantly to the industry with successful launches of an Alcatel-Lucent internal venture and two projects, 25 patents, and 10 accepted IEEE standard proposals. His scientific breakthroughs include the world’s fastest wireless broadband demonstrator; patented adaptive topology control of software-defined radio networks; and QoS provision to unreliable energy-harvesting powered wireless links. His patents have been officially referenced by over 260 patents (from Apple, Intel, Ericsson, Samsung, Nokia, Qualcomm, Blackberry, and Huawei) with a substantial impact on industrial roadmaps.

Dr Ni serves as Chair of IEEE VTS NSW chapter since 2020, Editor of IEEE Transactions on Vehicular Technology since 2022, Editor of IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications since 2018, and served as first Secretary and then Vice-Chair of IEEE VTS NSW chapter (2015 – 2019), Editorial Board Member for Hindawi Journal of Engineering (2012 – 2015), Track Chair of VTC2017-spring, Track Co-chair of VTC2016-spring, Publication Chair of BodyNet 2015, and Student Travel Grant Chair of WPMC 2014. He is a Senior Member of IEEE. He was awarded the 2021 IEEE Vehicular Technology Society Chapter of the Year Award.
