Project description

The University of Queensland operates a free inter-campus shuttle for staff and students between its Gatton and St Lucia campuses. The shuttles makes the 162 kilometre round trip four times a day, five days a week, 51 weeks of the year. The project would replace the two diesel buses currently servicing the route with hydrogen fuel cell electric buses (planned by 2022).

The hydrogen would be produced from an existing solar farm (and the refuelling facilities would be located) on the Gatton campus grounds.

It is estimated that substitution of the two diesel-powered buses by hydrogen-powered vehicles would reduce annual CO2 emissions by around 100 tonnes.

The project has received an offer of funding of up to AUD$4,850,000 through the Queensland Government’s Hydrogen Industry Development Fund.
