Project description

In April 2020, ATCO Australia and the Fortescue Metals Group (FMG) announced an agreement to collaborate to develop and operate a hydrogen refuelling facility at ATCO’s existing Jandakot Operations Centre in the Perth metropolitan area.

The Jandakot Operations Centre is host to the ATCO Clean Energy Innovation Hub, which has been generating and testing the use of renewable hydrogen in power applications and gas blending since its official opening in mid-2019.

The hydrogen refuelling facilities would provide ATCO, FMG and approved third parties with the opportunity to refuel vehicles capable of utilising hydrogen as the primary fuel source. This would include a fleet of Toyota Mirai fuel-cell electric vehicles (FCEV) made available by Toyota Motor Corporation Australia to ATCO and FMG.

ATCO will use its existing 260kW Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) electrolyser to produce the hydrogen to supply the refuelling station. ATCO will continue its gas blending test work while supplying the station.

The electrolyser has a maximum hydrogen production capacity of 23 tonnes per annum.

The existing integrated/combined power system would be sufficient to meet hydrogen production needs.

Refueller station operations are anticipated to begin in 2021.

Milestones

August 2020: The Western Australian Government announced that AUD$1.0 million from its Renewable Hydrogen Fund would be allocated to support development, deployment and operation of the project.
