Project description
The project proponents have announced plans to construct a renewable (solar-powered) hydrogen production facility in Bundaberg, Queensland. The 80 megawatt (MW) hydrogen electrolyser would be deployed in two 40 MW stages. Electrolyser provision is planned through a partnership with US company Plug Power. Annual hydrogen production is projected at around 6,000 tonnes per annum. The associated solar farm is presently estimated at around 100 MW capacity.
The Bundaberg plant is one of three planned hydrogen production facilities to be located on the east coast of Australia. A second facility is planned for Port Kembla in New South Wales while the third is also intended to be located in New South Wales (in one of its Renewable Energy Zones).
The produced hydrogen would support development of refuelling stations for hydrogen-powered vehicles, including announced plans by H2X Australia to develop and produce a range of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles at Port Kembla.
