We create new science, capabilities, and technologies across the emerging hydrogen value chain, supporting new Australian industries and large-scale emissions reduction. Collaboration is critical to achieving this purpose, and we draw skills from across almost all CSIRO Business Units to deliver projects that would not have been possible without the Future Science Platform construct. We also work closely with universities from around the country.
Our work program is currently targeting three impact areas: next generation production; novel carrier pathways; and ensuring we have the capability to make the environmental, social, and economic case for hydrogen energy. Many of these projects are undertaking the foundation science for the development of technologies that significantly reduce the number of process steps in the hydrogen value chain, offering the possibility for significant increases in efficiencies and reductions in cost. Our work is also addressing some scientific and technical barriers to the development of technologies that open up new value chains, supporting a diversification of production and distribution pathways.
