Agriculture

Supporting a profitable and sustainable agriculture industry in a low emissions world; by scaling novel technologies, practices and encouraging widespread adoption.

The transition to net zero will impact on the regions, particularly those reliant on industries in transition, but it will also create economic opportunities. There is an opportunity arising from decarbonisation to create a wide range of new industries and jobs suited to regional areas.

Agriculture plays a critical role in Australia. In 2021-22 agriculture accounted for 11% of goods and services exported, 2.4% of value added (GDP) and 2.5% of employment,

The nature of agriculture means that the sector will continue to emit emissions. A transition to a low emissions agriculture will require development of novel technologies and practices. This will include both ways to reduce emissions and create sequestration opportunities on farm. But this will not be enough, and transition will require their widescale adoption across agriculture and food sectors and this needs market and governance innovation to generate economic incentive for practice change as well as low cost means of recognising and rewarding the implementation of low emissions practices.
