India-Australia Green Steel Partnership

February 20th, 2023

The India-Australia Green Steel Partnership will encourage innovative technologies and export diversification pathways to deliver jobs to the resources sector in the transition to a low emissions economy. India and Australia share similar iron ores, and by working on solutions together the two countries can accelerate decarbonisation of the steel industry. India is now the most populous country on Earth, and home to the world’s fastest-growing steel industry.

Leveraging CSIRO’s relationships with Australian and Indian industry and the Indian Government, the partnership will support commercialisation of innovative Australian and Indian technology to improve efficiencies and environmental outcomes in steel production.

Part of our Towards Net Zero Mission, this partnership will help India meet its growing steel requirements, deliver on our shared vision for lowering emissions, and help diversify Australian exports.  Working closely with the Indian Ministry of Steel the partnership will develop and demonstrate technologies for steel decarbonisation including through the use of hydrogen, carbon capture and storage, and biomass.
