Climate Change Authority releases insights into carbon sequestration
On 17 April 2023 the Climate Change Authority released a policy insights paper, ‘Reduce, remove and store: the role of carbon sequestration in accelerating Australia’s decarbonisation’.
The paper contains 23 policy insights as part of a “deep dive” designed to help policymakers, emitters and markets better understand how sequestration can be scaled-up, accelerated and used responsibly.
It summarises the Authority’s policy insights that follow from the CSIRO’s technical report titled ‘Australia’s Carbon Sequestration Potential’, led by the Towards Net Zero Mission and CarbonLock Future Science Platform.
Michael Battaglia, Towards Net Zero Mission Lead, said “To transition to a net zero world, it’s not enough to simply lower our emissions. We need to permanently remove significant amounts of greenhouse gases from the atmosphere, requiring accelerating the development of carbon sequestration technologies. The Climate Change Authority’s paper will help policymakers and markets understand how sequestration can be scaled up and used responsibly. We are proud to have laid the groundwork with our technical report.”
Andrew Lenton, CarbonLock Future Science Platform Director, said “Negative emissions technologies that are fast-acting, scalable, cost-effective and responsible will be critical in Australia’s path toward net zero emissions. This paper highlights Australia’s natural advantages that position us as a global leader in developing these technologies and provides critical insights into developing this potential.”
