CSIRO welcomes Rebecca Wheadon

CSIRO is excited to welcome Rebecca Wheadon as the Site Entity Lead for the Murchison Radio-astronomy Observatory.

Based in Perth, Rebecca will be coordinating site activities for the resident radio telescopes and supporting the future development of the Murchison Radio-astronomy Observatory (MRO).

We first met Rebecca in 2010, when she was working with our industry partner Aurecon, on the infrastructure for the Australian Square Kilometre Array (ASKAP) radio telescope, located on the MRO.

After the successful completion of the ASKAP project, we continued working with Rebecca’s Aurecon team to design the infrastructure for the future SKA-Low telescope. This massive parcel of work was reviewed in 2019 and approved by an international panel of experts.

With construction of the SKA-Low telescope due to commence in 2022, Rebecca’s experience working with CSIRO is going to be invaluable. Rebecca also has 15 years’ management experience in the telco, education, and defence sectors, bringing vital expertise to the team as we navigate the complexities of building the SKA-Low telescope at the MRO. (The SKA-Mid telescope will be built in South Africa and combined they will be the world’s largest radio telescope!)

In her ‘downtime’, Rebecca is a Masters champion and has represented Australia and her local state of Western Australia in track cycling events around the world.
