Dr Liming Zhu
- Liming leads the SCS research program, with 200+ people innovating in big data analytics infrastructure, computational and simulation sciences platforms (including verticals like satellite/aerial images, visual analytics and AR/VR), data modelling and integration, data platforms, trustworthy systems, distributed systems, business process management, legal informatics/regulation technology, provenance, blockchains, software ecosystems, software engineering/architecture, DevOps, privacy and cybersecurity.

Dr Surya Nepal
- Surya leads the distributed systems security group with 30+ staff and 50+ PhD students. His research focus is on development and implementation of technologies in distributed systems (including cloud, IoT and edge computing) and social networks, specifically security, privacy, and trust. He has 200+ peer-reviewed publications, has co-edited three books and co-invented three patents. He is a member of the editorial boards of IEEE Transactions on Service Computing, ACM Transactions on Internet Technology and Frontiers of Big Data- Security Privacy, and Trust. He is a theme leader of the Cybersecurity CRC, holds a conjoint faculty position at UNSW and an honorary professor position at Macquarie University.

Dr Sherry Xu
- Dr Xu leads the Software Systems (SS) Research Group. SS group’s research areas include software engineering, data sharing platform, AI ethics and engineering, applied ML, and trusted processes. Dr Xu is also a conjoint senior lecturer at the School of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) of the University of New South Wales (UNSW). Her personal research interests include Software Architecture, Blockchain, (Big) Data Sharing Infrastructure, Engineering for ML System, Model-Driven Development (MDD), Business/Software Processes. She published the first textbook on the topic of blockchain application design in 2019. Based on the book, she designed and is teaching a blockchain course at UNSW.

Dr John Taylor
- John leads complex, multi-site, large scale interdisciplinary teams of research scientists, computational scientists, computer scientists and software engineers from all areas of CSIRO science and Information Management and Technology (IM&T) to deliver quality strategic science. He is also Program Leader, HPC and Computational Science, at Defence Science and Technology Group where he is building a new HPC capability to support defence research.

Dr Thierry Rakotoarivelo
- Thierry’s research focuses on data privacy and information security, and their application to federated systems. He is interested in the design and use of frameworks for privacy risk assessment, the development of provable privacy mechanisms, and the study of utility/privacy trade-off in specific application domains.

Dr Mark Staples
- Mark is a Senior Principal Researcher in the SCS program, and leads a Challenge pilot across Data61 on visible and connected supply chains. He coordinates blockchain research at Data61, and leads various blockchain projects including work towards the Australian National Blockchain. He is the Data61 representative on Standards Australia’s blockchain and distributed ledger technology standardisation committee as part of ISO’s technical committee TC307. Mark joined Data61 in 2015.
