Ngarlbugala 2023 Pawsey update

As we embrace the Noongar season of Birak, the warmer weather fuels our efforts to accelerate innovation and research through our advanced supercomputing and data services supporting world-class astronomy and a wide array of scientific domains.

Real-time detection of Fast radio bursts with Supercomputers

Pawsey recently hosted its third PaCER conference and hackathon, PCon23. The Pawsey Centre for Extreme Scale Readiness (PaCER) brought together over 60 scientists from 18 global institutions, achieving significant milestones in their projects with the support of a dedicated group of HPC experts and hackathon mentors. Among PaCER’s groundbreaking projects is “BLINK and you’ll miss it: blazingly-fast all-sky radio astronomy pipelines” led by Dr. Marcin Sokolowski.

Dr. Sokolowski’s visionary project leverages next-gen supercomputers and Pawsey’s expertise to conduct real-time image-based searches for fast radio transients. This innovation aims to get telescopes like MWA and SKA-Low to detect phenomena such as spontaneously emitting neutron stars in real time. Immerse yourself in the cosmic wonders by watching Dr. Sokolowski’s insightful video.

A Stellar Evening at Pawsey

In celebration of World Space Week, we had the privilege of hosting the ‘Sustaining Earth and Beyond Space Innovation and Achieving SDGs’ event. The evening unfolded as a constellation of insights, with Hon. Minister Stephen Dawson inaugurating a night dedicated to exploring the intersection of space technology and the United Nations 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

An impressive lineup of speakers, including astronomer Dr. Clancy James, discussed the significance of space exploration, its profound impact on achieving SDGs, and the benefits it extends to all inhabitants of our planet. Pawsey’s commitment to diverse research fields, advanced radio astronomy telescope operations, and contributions to the Australian Space Data Analysis Facility (ASDAF) were showcased, emphasising our deep connection to the cosmos.
