Mary Mackay, originally from Scotland, was a nomadic traveller, living, studying and working all over the world until she moved to Tasmania in 2016 where she put down roots. She is behavioural economist interested in how and why people make decisions. After completing her PhD in behavioural economics at The University of Tasmania she completed her postdoctoral fellowship at CSIRO where she is now working as a research scientist under the Impossible Without You scheme in the Ending Plastic Waste Mission. Her research interests have focussed primarily on compliance behaviour in fisheries and is now using the same compliance framework in the marine debris domain. She has been a keen collaborator with the interdisciplinary group The Centre for Marine Socioecology. Her research interests also include knowledge exchange at the science- policy interface, gender equity in research, and early career research development in Marine Social Sciences (practical tips and tools). She is excited to develop her knowledge and understanding of behavioural drivers of pro-social versus pro-self decisions that are relevant to contributing to the CSIRO Oceans and Atmosphere mission towards a health marine ecosystem now and into the future.
