Addressing sustainability challenges usually involves system change, which brings complex, interconnected, contested, cross-scale, inter-temporal, cross-sectoral dynamics. Many of our partners have a pressing need to focus on immediate issues, and have limited capacity to consider the broader context of the system when addressing their sustainability needs or aspirations.

The Mamma Framework offers people a way to think more explicitly and clearly about their role in enabling system level change for sustainability. Having a framework that is explicitly about the process of system change encourages:

  • more effective cross project and program sharing and learning
  • more strategic project design that focuses on the context of a system-change mission
  • guides monitoring and learning about the multiple dimensions of system change, including changes made by other agents, and evaluation of the impact of individual projects in the context long-term, system-wide change
  • clarity about the role of different project participants and other agents in the system change mission
  • better communication of our research team’s approach to system change

The Mamma is a framework for growing innovation and research into transformational impact at scale through multi-level learning and action. This approach is about people and their roles, rather than a clinical protocol, it connotes connecting, enabling, nurturing and growing, embracing and story-telling.

The Mamma is a framework for growing innovation and research into transformational impact at scale through multi-level learning and action.
